Jefferson Park Golf course. Freddie Couples. Goofy driving range nets. Municipal course. And the people you see there...
If you're like many of us in the club, you have some great memories of going to Jefferson. I remember trips to the range with my dad to hit white balls that rolled out of green boxes. Riding my bike to Jefferson to spend free time on the putting green...
Some 40 years later, Jefferson still remains a focal point for a unique golf experience.
In 1997, Dr. John Lee, a retired radiologist, formed the Bogey Bear Junior Golf Foundation to bring golf to youngsters of urban Seattle who ordinarily would not have a chance to play this great game. With free instruction, equipment, subsidized green fees and practice balls, kids learn that golf is a great challenge and that learning golf offers much more than just a fun time.
There is no cost to the participants. The activities are funded by private donations and corporate sponsorships. Instruction is provided by an enthusiastic corps of volunteers/mentors who teach golfing fundamentals along with golfing courtesy, respect for others, anger management, and care for the course and equipment.
Right in the middle of Bogey Bear Golf you can find our own Cal Harada, organizing, motivating and contributing his time and effort to the kids.
Cal?!! Our Cal??!!! Every Friday night from about March to October, you'll find Cal at the driving range with the kids. And there's also the Saturday instructional clinics and the Little League at Interbay.
The foundation is holding the 1st Annual Bogey Bear Golf Tournament on Monday, June 17, 2002 at the Plateau Golf and Country Club. That's right golfers, The PLATEAU! If you've been wondering what it's like to play on one of the toughest courses in Washington, here's your chance. It's a 4-person scramble with an awards dinner, silent auction and raffle.
Contact Scott Chin at 206-985-5800 or Lisa Lee at 206-461-5826 for more information.
All donations are tax deductible and very welcome. Interested in signing up as a corporate sponsor? Or how about working with the kids?
The game of golf gives us a lot. Here's one way to give something back to the game and to the community. And have some fun too!
A final thought for the next time you tee off with Cal. Think about a whole generation of golfers inspired by...Cal?!!
